Tropical forests are among the most diverse ecosystems in the world, completed by huge biodiversity. An expansion in natural resource extraction through open-pit mining activities leads to increasing land and tropical forest degradation. Proper science-based practices are needed as an effort to reclaim their function. This paper summarizes the existing practice of coal mining, covering the regulatory aspects and their reclamation obligations, the practices of coal mining from various sites with different land characteristics, and the reclamation efforts of the post-mining landscapes in Indonesia. The regulations issued accommodate the difference between mining land inside the forest area and outside the forest area, especially in the aspect of the permit authority and in evaluating the success rate of reclamation. In coal-mining practices, this paper describes starting from land clearing activities and followed by storing soil layers and overburden materials. In this step, proper handling of potentially acid-forming materials is crucial to prevent acid mine drainage. At the reclamation stage, this paper sequentially presents research results and the field applications in rearranging the overburden and soil materials, controlling acid mine drainage and erosion, and managing the drainage system, settling ponds, and pit lakes. Many efforts to reclaim post-coal-mining lands and their success rate have been reported and highlighted. Several success stories describe that post-coal-mining lands can be returned to forests that provide ecosystem services and goods. A set of science-based best management practices for post-coal-mine reforestation is needed to develop to promote the success of forest reclamation and restoration in post-coal-mining lands through the planting of high-value hardwood trees, increasing trees’ survival rates and growth, and accelerating the establishment of forest habitat through the application of proper tree planting technique. The monitoring and evaluation aspect is also crucial, as corrective action may be taken considering the different success rates for different site characteristics.

The Role of Indigenous Mycorrhizae of Corn Plants in Various Soil Types in Gunung Kidul, Indonesia

Indigenous Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae (VAM) are natural mycorrhizae from specific areas that have good environmental adaptability. This study, conducted from January to November 2020 at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, aimed to isolate the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus so that it can be used as information on the type and role of VAM on Gunung Kidul soil. The research was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three factors. The first factor was soil type from Gunung Kidul Regency (Inceptisol, Mollisol, and Alfisol), the second factor was sterilization (sterilized soil and unsterilized soil), and the third factor was corn variety (local and hybrid). Analysis of soil and plant growth was performed by using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (Tukey's HSD) Test. Genetic detection of root infecting VAM was performed by using Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP) method with FAM AML1-AML2 labeled primers. The VAM detected in the roots of hybrid variety included Acaulospora sp., Gigaspora sp., and Septoglomus sp., and those in the roots of local variety were Acaulospora sp., Gigaspora sp., and Funelisformis sp. The results showed that the role of VAM could be seen through unsterilized soil so that there was no VAM elimination in the soil. Unsterilized soil showed the best results of root infection, leaf fresh and dry weight, leaf phosphor (P) content, and leaf P uptake. Meanwhile, Alfisol showed the best result of root infection, fresh weight, dry weight, leaf P content, and leaf P uptake. The treatment of plant varieties showed that the varieties did not significantly affect the root infection, fresh weight, dry weight, leaf P content, and leaf P uptake.

Ex-limestone mining quarry has poor soil fertility, both biological, chemical, and physical condition due to the mining process. Marginal land conditions such as ex-limestone mining quarry require high survival seedlings. Application of ectomycorrhizal fungi is an alternative that can be done to improve the success of restoration. Acacia mangium is one of the plants that could be colonized by many types of mycorrhizal such as ectomycorrhiza. This research aimed to determine the growth of A. mangium seedlings in ex-limestone mining growth media and the effect of ectomycorrhiza application on the growth of A. mangium. The research used a completely randomized design with six treatments and five replications. Treatment consisted of 100% soil with mycorrhiza, 100% soil without mycorrhiza, 50% soil + 50% limestone tailings + mycorrhiza, 50% soil + 50% limestones tailings without mycorrhiza, 100% tailing with mycorrhiza and 100% tailing without mycorrhiza. The seedlings used in the study germinated from seeds taken from Lampung Timur Regency. The seeds germinated in sand for one month, then used as the research material. The measurement taken were height, diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, measured were root length, canopy dry weight, and total dry weight. The colonization of ectomycorrhiza is measured by counting the percentage of colonization. The symbiosis with rhizobium measured by number of root nodules. Data were tested for variance analysis, followed by Least Significance Different Test at significant level of 1% and 5%. The results showed that the percentage of A. mangium life was high, reaching 100%. All growth parameters showed that plant colonized by mycorrhiza has remarkably better values compared to non-mycorrhiza plants.Keywords: limestone, ectomycoriza, mangium, phytoremediation
