Population-based normative values for the Western Ontario and McMaster (WOMAC®) osteoarthritis index and the Australian/Canadian (AUSCAN) hand osteoarthritis index functional subscales

Abstract: Normative values provide opportunity for benchmarking the health status of individuals against their age- and gender-matched peers in the general population. These normative values provide unique opportunities, for using the WOMAC and AUSCAN Indices in benchmarking applications, in both clinical practice and research.

“…However, general population norm data are-to the best of our knowledge-not available for the KSS and scarce for the WOMAC. An Australian study on general population norm data for the WOMAC Function scale found a mean of 17.8 points [38], which is comparable to our 12-month threshold of 16.5 points for treatment success. This finding suggests that reaching the population mean in the WOMAC Function scale reflects treatment success.…”

“…The primary outcome was change between baseline and 18-month follow-up in the Physical Functioning scale of WOMAC (WOMAC-PF) LK 3.0 23. The WOMAC-PF is a disease-specific (hip or knee OA) self-report instrument with 17 items, yielding a score between 0 (good function) and 68 (poor function).…”
