Population dynamics of major defoliators (semiloopers and tobacco caterpillar) in soybean crop

Abstract: A study was carried out to find out the effect of various weather parameters on the occurrence of major defoliators in soybean crop. Semilooper larval population was recorded late July/early August and their peak activity observed during 33-34, 33-36 and 37-39 standard weeks, in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively. Among the weather factors, morning relative humidity showed significant (r=0.954) and positively, highly influence on the larval population per mrl whereas evening humidity (r=-0.644) and sunshine hrs… Show more

“…The present findings are in line with Yeotikar et al (2015) who recorded the incidence from 30 th SMW to 38 th SMW. Babu et al (2017) recorded the incidence from 30 th SMW to 38 th SMW whereas Matti and Deotale (2017) reported its incidence from 35 th to 46 th SMW. Kumar (2012) also recorded similar observations where S. litura was maximum at flowering and pod formation stages in soybean.…”

“…Soybean (Glycine max L.) is an important crop worldwide (Babu et al, 2016). It accounts for approximately 68% of the world's protein and 27.7% of the vegetable oil used for human consumption (https://downloads.usda.library.cornell.edu/usdaesmis/files/tx31qh68h/2f75sh11z/7d27b176h/oilseeds).…”

“…(Lepidoptera : Arctiidae), both are the serious polyphagous pest of various important crops such as pulses, oil seeds, millets, cotton and vegetables etc. (Tandi and Narayananan, 2002 ;Qin et al, 2004;Babu et al, 2017;Kalyan and Ameta, 2017). During the early instars, the caterpillars feed gregariously on the leaves then disperse and cause severe economic damage (Gupta and Bhattacharya, 2008).…”
