Population specific reference ranges of CD3, CD4 and CD8 lymphocyte subsets among healthy Kenyans

Abstract: BackgroundThe enumeration of absolute CD4 counts is of primary importance for many medical conditions especially HIV infection where therapeutic initiation depends on the count. These ranges tend to vary across populations. However, these ranges have not been comprehensively established in the Kenyan population. Therefore, this study aimed at establishing the reference ranges for the CD4 and CD8 T-lymphocytes in normal healthy individuals in Kenya.MethodsA total of 315 individuals of the ages between 16 and 60… Show more

“…Another limitation is that both HIV-negative cohorts were from a Western European population, whereas CD4 cell counts are generally reported to be lower in sub-Saharan African populations. 48 In our study, CD4 and CD8 cell count and CD4:CD8 ratio trajectories in HIV-positive individuals from sub-Saharan Africa were all somewhat lower compared with those from Western Europe or North America. Whether these differences translate into differential risk of morbidity or mortality is difficult to investigate because of other socioeconomic and psychosocial differences.…”

“…Furthermore, IL-5 is crucial in development and activation of eosinophils that directly influence the airway narrowing through the release of TGF-β, IL-4, and IL-13. In the present study, Balb/c mice were used as a model for induction of airway inflammation as they could develop an efficient Th2-biased immunological response (23,24). In this study, the animals (except for normal group) were sensitized twice on day 0 and day 14, to ensure the eosinophils did not return to the baseline level and to prevent the development of tolerance (25).…”
