Population structure and dynamics and habitat conditions of the native crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes in a pond : a case study in Basque Country (Northern Iberian Peninsula)

Abstract: A natural and in appearance healthy population of the native crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes inhabiting a pond near Bilbao has been studied for three years, together with abiotic conditions of their habitat. The population occupies a littoral fringe (100 m length, 6 m width and approximately 1:5 m maximum depth), and has an estirnated average density of 1.67 specimen/m2. Despite the very high conductivity of the water (al1 values are above 1,750 pS/cm), total net production in the period 94-96 was 2,571.1 I… Show more

“…White-clawed crayfish are well adapted to habitat conditions of these river tracts, which are affected by the arid Mediterranean climate. Indeed, unlike other geographic regions (REYNOLDS, 1979(REYNOLDS, , 1982LAURENT, 1988;ANTÓN et al, 2000;RALLO and GARCÍA-ARBERAS, 2000), in Central Italy A. italicus does not live in lentic waters, though it is possible to observe some freshwater crayfish populations in small glacial lakes over 1 100 m a.s.l. The low genetic variability of these populations in this region (SANTUCCI et al, 1997) makes A. italicus more vulnerable and threatened.…”

“…A. pallipes and A. italicus have been found in ponds (e.g. Rallo & Garcia-Arberas, 2000) or even in burrows (Peay & Hirst, 2003), which are habitats that can experience low oxygen concentrations. Grandjean et al (1996) found a well established population of A. pallipes in small ponds where dissolved oxygen was measured between 0.8 and 5 mg l )1 .…”

“…Males become mature at a size of 6.0-7.0 cm total length (SKURDAL and TAUGBØL, 2002). Therefore the juvenile part of the population has not been studied which was also the case in studies by NIEMI (1977), PURSIAINEN (1978, 1982), SKURDAL et al (1992), LAPPALAINEN and PURSIAINEN (1995), WESTMAN et al (1995), BOHL (1997), FRUTIGER et al (1999, GRANDJEAN et al, (2000), RALLO and GARCÍA-ARBERAS (2000).…”

“…KREBS, 1989) also pointed out Schumacher and Eschmeyer method as the most robust and useful ecological model. The estimation of population size by mark-recapture methods was frequently used in other studies (BROWN and BOWLER, 1977;WESTMAN and PURSIAINEN, 1982;SKURDAL et al, 1992;MOMOT, 1993;LAPPALAINEN and PURSIAINEN, 1995;WESTMAN et al, 1995;GHERARDI et al 1996;BYRNE et al 1999;CRUZ-HERNANDEZ et al 1999;FRUTIGER et al 1999;GRANDJEAN et al, 2000;RALLO and GARCÍA-ARBERAS, 2000;RENTZ and BREITHAUPT, 2000).…”
