Nematopalaemon schmitti (Holthuis, 1950) is a caridean shrimp of the Palaemonidae family (Rafinesque, 1815) (Martin & Davis, 2001), distributed on the marine and estuarine waters of the Western Atlantic Ocean in shallow areas to 75 m depth (Ferreira et al., 2010;Holthuis, 1980). This species plays an important trophic role in the structure of non-consolidated environments both as a carnivorous predator and as a prey item for higher trophic levels (Herrera et al., 2017;Marioghae, 1989). Furthermore, it constitutes part of the bycatch taken in penaeid shrimp fisheries of high economic interest in Brazil, for example, seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) (Costa et al., 2016).In the marine environment, the upwelling regions are considered as the most productive areas in the ocean due to cold and rich nutrient waters (Smith, 1968). Most of the regions of coastal upwelling in the world are located on the east coast of oceans: in Peru, Ecuador, California, and Oregon on the Pacific Ocean and northwest Africa and southern Benguela on the Atlantic Ocean (Franchito et al., 2008). Species of the decapod family Palaemonidae are common components of tropical coastal waters and coral reefs. The majority of these species are symbionts of various invertebrate phyla. Despite a long history of research on their species diversity in the Dutch Caribbean, recent field expeditions have yielded much new information. Combined with examinations of specimens housed in Naturalis Biodiversity Center and information from literature, a comprehensive list of Dutch Carribean palaemonids is provided. Newly collected material was primarily identified via morphological analyses. Additional molecular phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial COI and 16S and nuclear Histone 3 (H3) genes were conducted in search of cryptic species on the one hand and to check conspecifity in species that were found on multiple host species on the other hand. In total, 46 species are here listed for the Dutch Caribbean of which 24 are here recorded for the first time for one of the islands. One species new to science was discovered and is herein described. Sixty new host associations are recorded. In light of biodiversity loss and increasing anthropogenic pressure on declining coral reefs, documenting the diversity of palaemonids and other coral reef species to provide baseline data takes on a new urgency.

The investigation of the temporal dynamics of marine benthonic populations is an important tool to evaluate whether and how they are responding to environmental changes. Here we compared the population biology and reproduction of Hepatus pudibundus in Ubatuba Bay after a 20-year gap. The first samplings were done in September 1995 − August 1996 (hereafter 1ºP), and the second, in September 2016 − August 2017 (hereafter 2ºP). In both periods, five sites were trawled aboard a shrimp fishing boat. We captured 865 crabs in the 1ºP and 4222 in the 2ºP. The mean individual size of each demographic group, the size at the onset of sexual maturity, and the growth rate of females was lower in the 2ºP. The reproductive and recruitment periods were continuous. Our comparable data on population features taken 20-years apart showed adjustments regarding the sizes and abundance of mature individuals of H. pudibundus of Ubatuba Bay, indicating that this species is resilient to the anthropogenic impacts in the region.
