Portable Handheld Ultrasound in Austere Environments: Use in the Haiti Disaster

Abstract: The use of a handheld portable ultrasound machine was effective for patient management decisions in resource-poor settings, and decreased the need to triage selected patients to higher levels of care. Ultrasound was very useful for evaluation of non-traumatic abdominal pain. Dynamic capability is necessary for ultrasound evaluation of undifferentiated hypotension and cardiac and lung examinations. Ultrasound also was useful for guidance during procedural applications, and for aiding in the diagnosis of parasit… Show more

“…The same set of advantages that make ultrasound valuable in the setting of MCI also make it attractive in non-disaster, pre-hospital civilian response [25,101]. Several applications of ultrasound technology have followed natural calamities, such as earthquakes and wind disasters [1,25,100]. Portable ultrasound was used in the triage of patients after the 2010 Haitian earthquake [100].…”

“…[132,133] Disaster medicine has used ultrasound in the field and in hospitals when other resources are overwhelmed or unavailable. [134][135][136][137][138] These situations often employ ultrasound for the focused scans delineated in ACEP's Emergency Ultrasound Guidelines. [139] The use of ultrasound in conjunction with telemedicine is intriguing.…”
