In the subject of computer networking students must understand the concepts and be confident in configuring and securing a range of network devices and systems. Challenges are faced in assessing practical networking and security exercises in a laboratory environment utilising multivariate devices and operating systems that involve real or simulated systems operating in real or virtualized environments. The working environment for a practical exercise must be pre-configured and once an exercise has been completed the results extracted to enable formative or summative assessment of the outcomes. Using manual methods this process can be time consuming and it would therefore be beneficial to implement some form of automation. To facilitate this a new application has been developed that automates the configuration management and assessment processes within a computer networking laboratory. The new application has been successfully used to assess the extent to which students have been able to configure secure networks using case-study based exercises. The development challenges of the application and rationale for the implementation of the prototype application are discussed. A test methodology is presented in which the application is used to assess the outcomes of a computer networking exercise, comparing the results obtained from the application with those of a proprietary simulator. This demonstrates that the prototype application is able to successfully and accurately automate the assessment of the practice of networking and security in the context of defined parameters. Further work is suggested to improve the assessment mechanism employed by the application, seek enhancements and to conduct additional tests.

The traditional pen and paper exam is overwhelmingly the preferred method of assessing students in Norwegian higher education. There is a pressing need to explore alternative approaches that can authentically assess critical competencies needed for solving real-world tasks that professionals typically face in their field. In this paper, we present a solution to address the challenge of applying authentic assessment to a practical course in Network and System Administration (NSA). Furthermore, the solution we propose provides formative feedback to the candidates while a task is being evaluated.

Two dedicated networking laboratories are used by students on a computer networking degree program to undertake practical work using a range of networking equipment and operating systems. Various challenges are faced in the running of the laboratories, particularly in configuration management, sharing the facilities between a number of modules with diverse requirements and the need to assess the practical learning outcomes of a large number of students using them. Some of the configuration management processes have been automated to alleviate some of the challenges within the laboratory environment. An application has been developed to assist with generic assessment that can generate feedback for students. A simulation system with features of assessment automation is also available. This paper will focus on the issues faced in running the laboratories, in particular using this environment to assess practical outcomes. It will evaluate some of the work done to alleviate some of the issues and analyze areas for improvement. The need for a mechanism that can be used to automate the assessment of practical outcomes using real network systems or simulators has been identified. It is proposed that the mechanism will be implemented as a software application whose requirements will be discussed.
