Position of rigid and foldable iris-fixated myopic phakic intraocular lenses evaluated by Scheimpflug photography

Abstract: The intraocular position of rigid pIOLs and foldable silicone iris-supported pIOLs showed a difference between the 3 pIOL models in space to the crystalline lens and the corneal endothelium, which may affect long-term results in terms of IOL interaction with surrounding tissue.

“…The Artisan IOL has a vaulted design and is slightly raised on the iris plane. 29 This provides sufficient clearance between the IOL and the iris 24 and therefore prevents the IOL from interfering with the normal physiology of the iris as long as the IOL is well fixated to the iris.…”

“…[2][3][4]6,12,13 These results have been well documented for the spherical Artiflex IOL and have been compared with those of its predecessor, the rigid (PMMA) Artisan IOL. 9,[14][15][16][17] The foldable Artiflex toric pIOL has 2 main advantages over the rigid Artisan toric type. First, the incision for implantation is smaller than that for the PMMA version (3.2 mm versus 5.5 mm); the smaller incision allows a self-sealing wound with less induced astigmatism.…”

“…The ACD and the distance between the pIOL and the anterior capsule of the natural lens and corneal endothelium can be collected and followed. In 2008, Kohnen et al 12 reported the range of the distance between an iris-fixated IOL and the crystalline lens was 0.29 mm to 0.66 mm at 1 year in otherwise normal myopic patients. In our patient, the range was 0.20 mm to 0.32 mm in both eyes at 4 years.…”
