Position of the axillary nerve in the deltoid muscle

Abstract: The relationship of the anterior branch of the axillary nerve to the deltoid muscle was studied on both sides in 66 adult cadavers. The nerve runs a course on the deep surface of the deltoid muscle about 2.2 cm above the midpoint on the vertical plane of the muscle.

“…The nerve was found to lay 2.2-2.6 cm above the midpoint on the vertical plane of the deltoid muscle, and an equation was drawn to give the precise position of the nerve in this muscle. They postulated that the distribution of the nerve matches this equation with 99% confidence interval (Kulkarni et al, 1992). However, in our opinion, it is difficult to formulate the course of the anterior branch of the nerve with respect to the deltoid muscle as reported by Kulkarni et al (1992).…”

“…Those landmarks were found to be definitive to avoid injury to the axillary nerve during operative exposures for fixation of the humerus (Bono et al, 2000). Kulkarni et al (1992) have studied the position of the axillary nerve in the deltoid muscle. The nerve was found to lay 2.2-2.6 cm above the midpoint on the vertical plane of the deltoid muscle, and an equation was drawn to give the precise position of the nerve in this muscle.…”
