Positioning a Paediatric Compounded Non-Sterile Product Electronic Repository (pCNPeRx) within the Health Information Technology Infrastructure

Abstract: Numerous gaps in the current medication use system impede complete transmission of electronically identifiable and standardized extemporaneous formulations as well as a uniform approach to medication therapy management (MTM) for paediatric patients. The Pharmacy Health Information Technology Collaborative (Pharmacy HIT) identified six components that may have direct importance for pharmacy related to medication use in children. This paper will discuss key positions within the information technology infrastruct… Show more

“…Existing federal and corporate database structures for medical language could be employed to incorporate pCNSPs to facilitate complete transmission of electronically identifiable and standardized extemporaneous formulations. The lack of inclusion also stymies a uniform approach to CMM for pediatric patients, as these products do not appear on the patients’ medication records accurately [99].…”

“…The NCPDP SCRIPT release will be a paradigm change and take us closer to more complete data transmission for CNSPs. In addition, the Pharmacy Health Information Technology Collaborative (Pharmacy HIT), formed in 2010, has developed goals related to the relationship between clinical pharmacy practice and pediatric patients, with special focus on the transmission of eRx [12]. However, variability in how CNSPs are described at the pharmacy level is a major barrier, and there is an urgent need to codify uniform vocabulary standards at the macro level.…”

“…Manufactured products approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) as well as those found on the British National Formulary for Children [ 5 ] are listed and coded in computerized drug databases. Conversely, pCNSPs are not listed in any electronic repository that stores and allows their transmission into patient health record through eRx processing systems [ 6 ]. In addition, compounding monographs authorized by various professional bodies are not expressed in a digital format compatible with electronic transmission.…”
