Positive/Negative Symptomatology and Experimental Measures of Attention in Schizophrenic Patients

Abstract: In a search for an external validation of the negative syndrome construct and the attentional impairment item on Andreasen’s scale, 49 unmedicated schizophrenic patients were administered the Span of Apprehension Test and a Continuous Performance Test with two levels of difficulty. This schizophrenic sample performed significantly more poorly on the attentional tests than a comparable group of 27 healthy control subjects. Depending on the difficulty of the test we found a number of significant correlations bet… Show more

“…Hence, the relationship between CPT performance and duration of illness/number of admissions (Table 2) indirectly confirms former results (Nuechterlein et al 1986, Strauss et al 1993, Hain et al 1993 suggesting relations between visual attention/information processing impairments and negative or deficit symptoms.…”

“…Strauss et al (1993) found no relationship between CPT and BPRS but confirmed the correlation between d' and thought disorder. Hain et al (1993) applied a CPT similar to that of the present study (CPT-M) to a sample of N = 49 schizophrenic inpatents and found a significant correlation between sensitivity and the attentional impairment rating and the composite score of the SANS (Andreasen 1989). Although psychopathology in the present study was documented with a different method (PANSS), the results are in accordance with former findings: no relationship between CPT-d' and positive symptoms was observed, and the correlation with thought disorder reported by Nuechterlein et al (1986) and Strauss et al (1993) was confirmed by the correlation with the cognitive PANSS syndrome (see Table 2).…”

“…Assuming that Tr-Int had less communication problems with Tr-Pat, demograpic variables (including a scale for German proficiency), PANSS (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale [26]), HAM-D (Hamilton Depression Scale [27]) and GAFS (Global Assessment of Function- ing Scale, DSM-IV Axis V [28]) were completed by Tr-Int for all patients. Considering efforts to develop dimensions of the PANSS [29][30][31], the evaluation of the PANSS also included the psychopathological symdromes of schizophrenia [32]. The two research diagnoses as well as the clinical diagnosis, all three according to ICD-10, were then compared for agreement.…”

“…In fünf Arbeiten wurde die Span-Leistung mit klinischen Störungsmerkmalen von schizophrenen Patienten in Beziehung gesetzt, die bis auf die Probanden von Hain et al (1993) neuroleptisch mediziert waren. Zur Erfassung der Symptomatik dienten die Brief Psychiatrie Rating Scale (BPRS -Overall u.…”
