Positive risk management: Staff perspectives in acute mental health inpatient settings

Abstract: Aims To explore inpatient staff's understanding and implementation of positive risk management. Background Risk management is an essential skill for staff working in acute mental health inpatient settings. National policies advocate the use of positive risk management as a form of collaborative, recovery‐focused risk management. However, little is known about how staff understand, operationalize, and use positive risk management in practice. Design Qualitative reflexive thematic analysis study. Methods The aut… Show more

“…However, in our study the challenge of this 'medical model' framework seemed to hinder active clinical decision-making and acted as a barrier to positive risk taking, particularly for patients deemed 'risky'. This aligns strongly with some recent literature, which has explored the implementation of, and barriers to, positive risk management in acute mental health settings (Just et al 2021).…”

“…If medical and nursing sta lack a grasp of risk factors during nursing care, then they cannot predict the occurrence of risk events in time, or if the department lacks anticipatory care measures after the occurrence of risks, they may cause certain physical damage to patients and certain economic losses to the hospital. NRM is the process of identifying and evaluating the risks of possible harm to patients and caregivers and visitors in an organized and systematic way in hospitals and taking effective preventive measures [4][5][6][7][8]. In order to reduce the occurrence of nursing adverse events and medical disputes, nursing staff must pay attention to risk management in nursing work, and carefully find and eliminate safety hazards to guarantee the medical safety of patients as shown in Figure 1.…”

“…Braun and Clarke (2022) argue that, if done correctly, the creative process of analysing the data and identifying themes should be considered a strength of this method. RTA has been applied in several research areas including health research (e.g., Campbell et al, 2021;Just et al, 2021), to explore the psychological needs of individuals (e.g., Dendle et al, 2022) and well-being (e.g., Remskar et al, 2022). RTA is an iterative process and time-consuming; thus, it requires the researcher to go back and forth to the data and interpret findings that can be clearly understood by the readers and have a practical application in some context (Campbell et al, 2021).…”
