Positron range in combination with point-spread-function correction: an evaluation of different implementations for [124I]-PET imaging

Abstract: Aim To evaluate the effect of combining positron range correction (PRC) with point-spread-function (PSF) correction and to compare different methods of implementation into iterative image reconstruction for 124I-PET imaging. Materials and methods Uniform PR blurring kernels of 124I were generated using the GATE (GEANT4) framework in various material environments (lung, water, and bone) and matched to a 3D matrix. The kernels size was set to 11 × 11… Show more

“…Of note, in this study we evaluated only standard reconstruction settings including PSF correction. The effect of PSF on image quality is well described [ 31 33 ] in the literature. PSF correction is known to reduce background noise and to enhance contrast [ 32 ].…”

“…Although iodine-124 has a similar positron range (Rmean = 4.4 mm) to gallium-68 (~4 mm), it is greater than fluorine-18 (0.6 mm) or Zr-89 (1.3 mm) [45], which can lead to degradation of high-resolution PET images. However, high-resolution PET data using iodine-124 is possible using prompt gamma correction and point spread function reconstruction methods and can be further improved with correction for the positron range [46].…”

“…Furthermore, positron range is dependent on the tissue and cannot be generalized for every patient. In cases where a high-range isotope is used, such as 124 I, 82 Rb, or 68 Ga, we recommend implementing a specific positron range correction kernel, as proposed in previous works [20,41,46].…”

“…Point Spread Function (PSF) models, implemented in the SRM using image or projection blurring kernels, are commonly used to achieve resolution modeling [19][20][21]. Blurring into the projection space can be applied to sinogram data, or to line of response (LOR) data, and it is considered a more fundamental approach, although it is also computationally more demanding.…”
