Possibility of increasing early crop potato yield with foliar application of silicon

Abstract: This paper analyses the effect of dosage (0.25 dm3 ha–1 or 0.50 dm3 ha–1) and time (the leaf development stage – BBCH 14–16, tuber initiation stage – BBCH 40–41, at both the leaf development stage and tuber initiation stage) of silicon-based stimulant Optysil application (200 g SiO2 and 24 g Fe in 1 dm3) on early potato yield and yield components. Optysil resulted in an increase in tuber number and tuber weight per plant. As a result, under periodic water deficits during tuber bulking, Optysil increased market… Show more

“…‘Catania’ is a high-yielding very early potato cultivar [ 52 ]. In the present study, the foliar-applied silicon (Na 2 SiO 3 ) increased yield and average tuber weight [ 50 ], but did not affect the content of dry matter in tubers [ 53 ]. The yield and average tuber weight were negatively correlated with the Cu, Mn, and Si content in tubers, but the dry matter content in the tubers was positively correlated with the content of these micronutrients.…”

“…Moreover, the dosage and the time of plant stage-dependent application of silicon are important [ 18 ]. In general, foliar silicon application is practical only at a very low dosage and starting in early plant-stage development [ 50 , 51 ]. There is scarce knowledge of the effect of different dosages and times of silicon application on the micronutrient concentration in potato tubers.…”

“…Studies with GMC showed a significant increase in tuber yield (by 9.5%) compared to the control combination and the share of tubers with a diameter above 60 mm [51]. The use of SM resulted in a significant increase in the marketable yield of tubers by 20.1% and the share of the medium-sized tuber fraction (41-50 mm in diameter) in the marketable yield [52].…”
