The collision of interplanetary shock waves with the bow shock wave‐magnetopause system is considered both in the gas‐dynamic and magnetohydrodynamic approximations. It is shown that the shock wave is reflected from the magnetopause as a rarefaction wave which, in turn, is reflected from the rearward side of the bow shock. This secondary rarefaction wave arrives at the magnetosphere after a time interval of 3–5 min after the interplanetary shock wave's arrival. The rarefaction wave decreases the flow pressure on the magnetosphere and causes the reverse (i.e., outward) motion of the magnetopause. With the help of an approximate solution of the differential equations the problem of rarefaction wave reflection from the magnetosphere is considered. The law of the subsolar point motion of the magnetosphere during the abrupt shock‐like perturbation is obtained. The experimental data confirm the theoretical results.

The propagation of shock waves in the solar wind and their three‐dimensional interaction with the terrestrial bow shock, magnetosheath, and magnetopause is examined theoretically and compared with observations made by the ISEE spacecraft. First the formulae underlying the new position and orientation of the bow shock front after the interaction are given. Then magnetic field and plasma data from the ISEE 1, 2, and 3 spacecraft are compared with the theoretical estimates of the propagation time of the shock waves between ISEE 1 and 3. Examination of data obtained on August 18, 1978, when both ISEE 1 and 3 were in the solar wind, show good agreement with theory. Using a simple model of the magnetosheath, we can extend our predictions to include the propagation time through the magnetosheath. Two examples of the interplanetary shock interaction with the magnetosphere while ISEE 1 and 2 were in the outer magnetosphere on August 27 and October 4, 1978, show quite satisfactory agreement with the predictions of this simple model. On August 27, 1978, the magnetopause is blown well past ISEE 1 and 2, and the two spacecraft pass completely through the magnetosheath in 2.5 min. Rapid as this may appear, we show that this behavior is as predicted by the theoretical treatment.

We have made various degrees of progress during the last two years in the areas covered by Topic III-6, Magnetic Storms and Substorms, including Aurora-Magnetospheric Relations. The finding of the V-potential structure above the auroral oval was certainly an important milestone in the history of magnetospheric research. The relationship between field-aligned currents and ionospheric currents has become increasingly clear during the last few years. Extensive attempts have been made to understand how the solar wind couples its energy to the magnetosphere and to find the expression for the rate of input energy from the solar wind to the magnetosphere. On the basis of this progress, a new model of the solar wind-magnetosphere relationship has begun to emerge.The interpretation of observed magnetotail phenomena is still very confusing. Some of the problems associated with this confusion are discussed. Decisive observations to identify the basic processes associated with the "injection" of ring current particles have not been made. However, the finding of 0 ions in the ring current belt was an exciting event during the last two years.
