Possible Sources for Some Trace Elements Found in Airborne Particles and Precipitation in Dorset, Ontario

Abstract: Two types of potential source contribution function analysis-Potential Source Contribution Function (PSCF) and Total Potential Source Contribution Function (TPSCF) analysiswere employed to study the source-receptor relationships for several trace elements (vanadium, selenium, arsenic, manganese, and indium) found in precipitation and airborne particles collected at Dorset, Ontario. This study identified areas in the United States and Canada as possible emission source areas that could contribute to the trace e… Show more

“…Lacustrine sediment accumulation occurs over time, trapping atmospheric particulates within sediment stratigraphies (Veselý et al 1993;Oldfield 1990;Rose and Harlock 1998). The composition of urban PM is complex and includes particles ranging from 0.001 to 100 lm composed of minerals, heavy metals, organics, magnetic spherules and persistent organic pollutants (Gao et al 1996;Allen et al 2001;Phalen 2002). The application of a wide range of environmental analyses to urban pond sediments allows the reconstruction of datable, highresolution, detailed changes in these pollution characteristics and their deposition rates spanning the last 200-300 years from pre-industrial times to present day (Worsley et al 2005;Norton 1986;Renberg 1986;Griffin and Goldberg 1983).…”

“…Second, to enable analysis using daily air quality data such as particulate matter components and volatile organic compounds. The arrival height was chosen as 500 m above ground level to represent a well-mixed convective boundary layer for regional transport investigation (Gao et al, 1996;Hafner and Hites, 2003;Begum et al, 2005;Sigler and Lee, 2006). The EDAS 40 km meteorological data were used since the dataset had the finest spatial resolution for North America that was available on the HYSPLIT website.…”

“…PSCF explicitly incorporate the airborne concentration data and air parcel backward trajectories and estimates the conditional probability function that an air parcel with a specified level of a pollutant concentration arrived at a receptor site after having passed through a specific region (Cheng et al, 1993;Gao et al, 1996;Kindap et al, 2006;Mehta et al, 2009;Neimi et al, 2009). The PSCF in an ij-th grid cell of a geophysical region is defined as:…”
