Possible spectral diagnostics for turbulent electric fields in solar flares

Abstract: A high level of electrostatic turbulence can be generated by plasma instabilities in solar flares. The turbulence, in general, has both quasistatic (ionic) and dynamic (electronic) components. Hydrogenic line profiles develop distinct features under the simultaneous effect of the quasistatic and dynamic turbulent electric fields: these feature s are discussed and the possible inferences that can be drawn as to the nature of the turbulent electric fields through their observation are pointed out. Solar flare sp… Show more

“…In laboratory plasmas, Langmuir oscillations have for instance been observed as they were excited by electron beams interacting with the plasma [19]. The effect of Langmuir waves on hydrogen Stark profiles has been discussed for a long time in different types of plasmas [4,6,20,21]. In this context simple models for the Langmuir field are given by [20] − → E L (t) = − → E p cos(ω p t + ϕ) , where ω p is the electron plasma frequency, or by [4,5] −…”

“…For ratios W of the order of one, a Gaussian distribution of the electric-field strengths has been measured [17], and is also predicted theoretically for the highest fields [15]. In the following, we have used a half-normal distribution for the reduced electric-field magnitude F = E/E 0 , with the Holtsmark microfield E 0 defined by E 0 = e/(4πε 0 r 2 0 ), where the average interparticle distance r 0 is given by (4/3)πr 3 0 N e = 1. The PDF P (F ) can be written as a function of the standard deviation σ of F :…”

“…Introduction. -The influence of collective electric fields on a line shape emitted in a plasma has been studied for several decades in different types of plasmas [1,2,3]. Most of the collective fields considered were described by linear waves, e.g.…”
