Post Activation Potentiation in North American High School Football Players

Abstract: Post activation potentiation (PAP) is an acute enhancement of muscular power production resulting from a high intensity potentiating exercise. Practical applications of the PAP phenomena as a warmup strategy are the focus of ongoing research. This study compared the effects of a dynamic and a PAP warm up strategy on speed and horizontal plane muscular power output. High School male football players (n = 16) participated in a repeated measures cross over design study consisting of 3 testing days. Day 1: one rep… Show more

“…It has demonstrated an enhancement in sprint ability aer ten single repetitions at 90% of 1RM (Chatzopoulos et al, 2007) and aer one set of three repetitions of the back squat at 91% 1RM in professional rugby players (Bevan et al, 2010). In football players aer PAP as a warmup strategy, an improvement in a sprint and horizontal plane muscular power output was observed (Tano et al, 2016). On the other hand, other authors have reported improvements in countermovement jump tests aer two different field running protocols in endurance runners (Boullosa & Tuimil, 2009).…”

“…One of these methods is the activation aer specific exercising or also known as Post Activation Potentiation (PAP). It is understood as a temporary increase in functional physical capabilities influencing performance (Lorenz, 2011;Tano, Bishop, Berning, Adams & DeBeliso, 2016). PAP phenomenon occurs aer conditioning activity with submaximal and maximum exercises, provoking an increase in the capacity of the striated skeletal muscle to produce strength (Lorenz, 2011).…”
