Post‐copulatory Mounting Behavior of the West Indian Sweetpotato Weevil, Euscepes postfasciatus (Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Abstract: Post‐copulatory associations between males and females have been found in a variety of insects and are often described as mate guarding. Males of the West Indian sweetpotato weevil Euscepes postfasciatus (Fairmaire) mount the female's back after copulation. Two hypotheses have been advanced to explain this behavior: mate guarding to prevent future copulations by rivals (hypothesis 1), and mate guarding to gain additional copulations (hypothesis 2). We conducted three experiments to test predictions from these … Show more

“…Males attempting to mate could be attracted to tubers that attracted females for oviposition. Both positive and negative responses of the female to the male are known in this weevil (Sato and Kohama 2007). Each weevil female usually lays one to several eggs a day, particularly when it is dark Alleyne 1991, Shimoji andKohama 1994).…”

“…Therefore, encounter rates will be low. This weevil is polygynous species (Sato & Kohama, 2007) and relatively long reproductive period (Raman & Alleyne 1991). Under these conditions and low inbreeding depression, theory predicts inbreeding with close relatives should not be avoided and would be adaptive as it increases inclusive fitness and ensures mating opportunities.…”

“…Both males and females mate multiply in their lifetime. Although a single male is able to inseminate up to five females in one night, females become unreceptive for about 1 week after copulation (Sato and Kohama 2007;Kumano et al 2009a). The mating behavior lasts for about 50 min, during which time male weevils mount females both before and after copulation (Kumano et al 2009a(Kumano et al , 2010.…”
