Post-earthquake economic resilience and recovery efficiency in the border areas of the Tibetan Plateau: A case study of areas affected by the Wenchuan Ms 8.0 Earthquake in Sichuan, China in 2008

Abstract: The border areas of the Tibetan Plateau and the neighboring mountainous areas have a high incidence of earthquakes with a magnitude greater than M s 5.0, as well as having a dense distribution of geological disasters such as collapses, landslides, and debris flows. Revealing the post-disaster economic development and recovery process is very important for enhancing disaster prevention and response capacity in order to formulate control policies and recovery methods for post-disaster economic reconstruction bas… Show more

“…The negative shock to the economy depicts the impacts of earthquakes on cities. The city with a high level of economic development will recover more quickly from earthquakes because it has easier access to various kinds of resources (Zhou et al, 2020). Besides, more investment opportunities and jobs generated by reconstruction work have positive feedback on the economic development.…”

“…It is worth highlighting that the existing literature includes: (a) differences in economic resilience under external shocks (not only COVID-19, but also the wenchuan earthquake in China and the subprime crisis in the us) and its influencing factors ( 21 , 27 , 28 ) and (b) seek to find the relationship between regulatory measures taken by government agencies to respond to COVID-19 and regional economic resilience ( 17 , 18 ). A common weakness of the underlying literature is its failure to compare and assess regional resilience and adaptation to the impact of COVID-19 and the delayed role of government forces in the economic system, with a particular emphasis on regions in China.…”

“…Researchers establishes different UR index systems from multi-dimensional perspective to measure UR deeply. Martin, Zhou et al and Rose et al all constructed an indicator system of economic resilience from the perspective of economic shocks (Martin and Gardiner, 2019;Rose, 2004;Zhou et al, 2020); Abdul et al set up a social resilience indicator system to enhance disaster management (Abdul Majeed et al, 2018;Abdul Majeed et al, 2020;Cutter et al, 2008). Nevertheless, some other scholars have established an inclusive system for evaluating urban disaster resilience from the four aspects: Ecological environment, Economy, Society and Infrastructure services (Ma et al, 2020).…”
