Post-stroke infections associated with spleen volume reduction: A pilot study

Abstract: Background Spleen volume reduction followed by re-expansion has been described in acute ischemic stroke in both animal and human studies. Splenic contraction might be partially due to sympathetic hyperactivity and might be accompanied by release of splenocytes in the peripheral circulation, leading to immunodepression. Aims To investigate whether spleen volume changes in the first week after stroke are associated with post-stroke infections, changes in lymphocytes count and autonomic dysfunction. Methods In pa… Show more

“…It has also been reported that patients with small SV after cerebral infarction and after bone marrow transplantation are more likely to develop infections. 18,19 This supports our hypothesis. Hata et al documented autopsy findings of a death after severe sepsis, similar to OPSI, in a healthy adult.…”

“…For example, patients with primary myelofibrosis and a low spleen volume experience improved leukemia-free survival and overall survival times compared with those with a high spleen volume ( 35 ). Post-stroke infections, as well as a decrease in lymphocytes and various lymphocyte subsets, are associated with a reduction in spleen volume following acute ischemic stroke ( 36 ). Notably, spleen size may also be a predictor of tumor prognosis.…”

“…The NLR was defined as the ratio of the absolute neutrophil count to the absolute lymphocyte count, which were counted in the peripheral blood sample on admission by use of fluorescent flowcytometric measurements (CELL-DYN Sapphire, Abbott Diagnostics, Abbott Park, IL) ( 14 , 21 ).…”
