Post-traumatic fibrous dysplasia of the parietal bone: A rare entity

Abstract: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a rare fibro-osseous lesion in which normal bone is replaced by abnormal fibrous tissue. Although a congenital disorder, a single case report of traumatic etiology had been described in the literature. We report a case of monostotic FD of the parietal calvarium in a 21-year-old female patient who presented to us with a single swelling in the parietal region been noticed after head injury sustained at the age of 7 years. After imaging investigations, the lesion was excised via cranioto… Show more

“…Cerebrospinal fluid fistulas complicate ∼ 2% of all head injuries and ∼ 12% to 30% of all skull base fractures; 11 CSF rhinorrhea and otorrhea are the most common forms of CSF fistulas after a head injury.…”

“…16 17 18 19 The rarity of craniopalpebral fistulas is due to the fact that the orbital walls are thicker and less fragile as compared with the thin bones of the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses and the cribriform plates. 4 Craniopalpebral fistulas are more commonly reported in children, 1 5 6 8 10 11 13 20 probably because their orbital walls are thinner. Additionally, frontal sinus agenesis has been hypothesized as one of the factors for the development of blepharoencephalocele.…”

“…A position correlation between increase in c-fos gene and FD was described by Marie et al [ 22 ]. Increase in c-fos gene has been related to post-traumatic FD in a couple of case reports[ 23 , 24 ]. Therefore, to avoid the risk of transforming a quiescent lesion into an aggressively growing lesion, we planned to proceed with sequential orthodontic tooth movement, using light forces, without applying any direct forces to the bone (through micro-implants) and to monitor the lesion periodically.…”

“…Moreover, there are more cases of frequent delays in the acquisition of medical attention and negligence, which usually leads to the exacerbation of the sequelae of TBI. 5 Pakistan is a low-income country with a population of over 180 million and a high rate of TBIs. It was reported in 2022 that nearly 800,000 people suffer from TBI in Pakistan, out of which nearly 60,000 to 70,000 people suffer from significant morbidity and mortality leading to long-term disability, morbidity, and mortality.…”
