Postcatheterization femoral artery pseudoaneurysms: Therapeutic options. A case-controlled study

Abstract: Despite the voluminous data in the literature of treating postcatheterization femoral artery pseudoaneurysms by thrombin guided injection, as a quick and effective method of therapy, with infrequent failures and complications, our study confirms the clinical usefulness of duplex-guided compression in the management of these pseudoaneurysms. The possibility of spontaneous thrombosis of small pseudoaneurysms is emphasized.

“…Femoral pseudoaneurysms (PA) have a reported incidence of up to 8% and are most commonly related to therapeutic cardiac procedures 4,8 . In peripheral vascular interventions diagnostic arteriography is linked with an incidence of 0.1% to 0.2% and therapeutic procedures are linked with an incidence of 0.8% to 2.2% 4,6 .…”

“…They have an incidence of 0.05% to 2% in diagnostic procedures and 8% in therapeutic procedures [1][2][3] . The incidence of this complication is increasing because endovascular procedures are becoming more common 4 . A femoral pseudoaneurysm is a serious complication of puncture because it can lead to bleeding into deep tissues that is hard to control.…”

“…When it fails, injection of thrombin is recommended. [11] Intervention radiology has increasingly become popular. In fact, it is the only alternative used to surgery for pseudoaneurysms.…”
