Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome Onset Within 24 Hours Following Moderna mRNA Booster COVID-19 Vaccination: Vaccine Adverse Event Vs. Hypertension?

Abstract: We present a case of a female who presented with the acute onset of neurological changes within 24 hours of receiving her third, or booster, dose of the mRNA Moderna (Cambridge, Massachusetts) coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. Her clinicoradiological findings were most consistent with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). Although PRES has been reported with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, this raised suspicion of a possible vaccine-induced … Show more

“…The time interval between COVID-19 diagnosis or vaccine administration and the appearance of PRES symptoms could be determined in 66 out of 85 subjects, with a mean of 18.4 days (± 16.3 days), with a minimum of 0 days and a maximum of 70 days. We found 2 articles that describe patients who developed PRES following anti-SARS-CoV2 vaccination [ 75 , 77 ] (2.4% of patients).…”

“…Recently, one case of PRES following administration of the Moderna mRNA booster was reported, but more studies will need to be conducted to determine a causal link. 153 In summary, serious neurological complications, including those affecting afferent vision, are exceedingly rare following vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, and the benefits of vaccination far outweigh any perceived risks.…”
