“…Although many of the ocular manifestations are believed to be secondary to the same phenomenon causing the underlying disease, namely immunologic disease that affects both the eyes and the bowel, other factors can be claimed to explain the occurrence of some ocular findings, especially genetic factors. In fact, while the eye manifestations sustained by the first mechanism show the same clinical profile as the bowel disease and in such cases bowel resection also results in an improvement of the ocular findings [20], in the case presented by us, for example, no correlation occurred between bowel and retinal disease. Also Hofley et al [26], in a series of 147 children affected by Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, did not find a relationship between the activity of bowel disease and the presence of ocular inflammation.…”
