Postoperative endophthalmitis due toBurkholderia cepaciacomplex from contaminated anaesthetic eye drops

Abstract: Microbiology culture and BOX-PCR results revealed contamination of local anaesthetic eye drops and the same organism was cultured from a group of patients with acute-onset postoperative endophthalmitis after an uneventful cataract surgery. Outbreaks may occur in the most vigilant settings, and any sterile consumable may be a common link.

“…These 50 cases were matched with the first 50 consecutive culture-positive referred cases in the same period (group B; beginning December 2014 backwards and ending March 2010). Two cluster endophthalmitis cases, one in-house (reported earlier) [4] and one referred (reported by another treating center) [5] were excluded from both groups. Institutional review board approval (LEC 09-15-110) was obtained for retrospective data collection and analysis.…”

“…Burkholderia multivorans and B. cenocepacia are most often associated with Bcc infections in humans, particularly cystic fibrosis patients . Contaminated medical devices and medications have been associated with nosocomial outbreaks . Bcc infections present a clinical challenge due to frequent antimicrobial resistance, which may be both intrinsic and acquired .…”
