“…Checklists and tools to standardize processes and practices are widely recommended to improve handoff communication and patient outcomes (Pucher et al, 2015; Reeves, Clark, Lawton, Ream, & Ross, 2017). For example, standard steps or process tools (Botti et al, 2009; Redley, Bucknall, Evans, & Botti, 2016), verbal communication tools such as SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) and the iSoBAR (Introductions, Situation, Observations, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) variant (Porteous, Stewart‐Wynne, Connolly, & Crommelin, 2009; Randmaa, Swenne, Martensson, Hogberg, & Engstrom, 2016), and a range of checklists have been reported in the literature (Botti et al, 2009; Rose, Newman, & Brown, 2019). There is evidence suggesting tools for standardization can provide structural supports, and these can empower nurses during interprofessional interactions like handoff by reducing perceptions of hierarchies or power imbalance, guiding communication, and promoting a shared understanding of team roles and expectations (Pucher et al, 2015; Randmaa, Martensson, Leo Swenne, & Engstrom, 2014; Reeves et al, 2017).…”
