Postoperative nausea and vomiting following lower limb surgery :a comparison between single-injection intraarticular anesthesia and continuous epidural anesthesia

Abstract: Study Objective : the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) following single-injection intraarticular anesthesia was compared to that following continuous epidural anesthesia. Design : Prospective, double-blind, randomized study. Setting : University-affiliated teaching hospital. Patients : Forty-eight patients finally participated in this study, and each group contained twenty-four patients. “…(2) GA + EA group: the epidural catheter was inserted in T10-T11, T11-T12, or T12-L1 of the thoracolumbar junction, as appropriate (15)(16)(17). When the epidural intubation was completed, lidocaine (Shanghai Zhaohui Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., China) (1%, 3 mL) was used as a test dose, and the anesthesia induction was administered with sufentanil 0.2-0.5 g/kg, propofol 1.5-2.5 mg/kg, rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg, and continuously-pumped remifentanil at 2-4 ng/mL.…”

“…Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common adverse effect that often occurs after surgery under general anesthesia. PONV occurs in approximately 30% of all postsurgical patients who receive general anesthesia, and its incidence rate can be up to 80% in high-risk patients (patients who are female, are nonsmokers, have a history of PONV, and receive postoperative opioids) [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Furthermore, owing to its surgical site characteristics, the incidence rate of PONV in patients who undergo tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy, which is a middle ear surgery, is 50–80% [ 5 , 6 ].…”
