Postoperative Sore Throat

Abstract: The incidence of postoperative sore throat was evaluated prospectively in 203 orotracheally intubated patients undergoing general anesthesia for surgical procedures. Patients were randomly assigned to have either a plastic oropharyngeal airway or a gauze bite-block in place during the operation and were evaluated for the occurrence of postoperative sore throat by questionnaire the day after surgery. The incidence of postoperative sore throat was 35.2% in the oropharyngeal airway group and 42.5% in the gauze bi… Show more

“…Firstly, traumatic laryngoscopy or placement of a nasogastric tube or rough suctioning may injure the pharyngolaryngeal mucosa. 15 Secondly, cuff design and pressure affect tracheal mucosal capillary perfusion. 16 , 17 Thirdly, contact of the tracheal tube with the vocal cords and posterior pharyngeal wall may result in edema or lesion.…”

“…Another understudied area of interest is whether post-procedure sore throat is secondary to an endoscopy procedure itself or concomitant anesthesia maneuvers. While there are data showing that intubation increases risk of sore throat 7 8 , a comprehensive evaluation of endoscopic and anesthesia risk factors is lacking in the literature.…”
