Poststructural Analysis: Analyzing Empirical Matter for New Meanings

Abstract: How one makes meaning differs according to the theoretical perspective one employs. Aligning with a poststructural theoretical perspective, the author understands that meaning is stabilized by being organized according to the concepts available. By using the same concepts to stabilize meaning, qualitative researchers have the propensity to limit the possibilities of experience and knowledge. One way qualitative researchers can consciously work toward creating new meaning is to experiment with applying alternat… Show more

“…Our current goal is to surface tensions, contradictions, and marginalized perspectives in the use of peer research in CBPR. Using Foucault's work to re-read and re-analyze data has proven useful for surfacing previously overlooked meaning in qualitative research ( Payne and Nicholls 2010 ; Kaufmann 2011 ).…”

“…This study is part of a bigger PhD project about power, knowledge and knowledge management in music festival organisations. Through taking a post-structuralist approach I aimed to understand festival staff members' perceptions and meanings of power and knowledge within the concepts available to them (Townley, 1993;Alvesson, 1996;Kaufmann, 2011). A reflexive ethnographic study was undertaken in order to understand these different meanings and changes in perception over the course of the festival life cycle.…”

“…In that sense all qualitative research is abductive, with the reality of the studied phenomenon faced “in the field” entangling with the theoretical understanding of the phenomenon. After construction of data, a researcher is often driven to seek closure, stabilize meanings, or present truths (Kaufmann 2011 ). Bendix-Petersen ( 2013 ) rejects the dualism between construction of data and its analysis, arguing them to be entangled.…”
