Posturographic Changes Associated with Music Listening

Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this study was to ascertain whether listening to music might cause changes in human stability and be useful in fall prevention and rehabilitation. The aim was also to find what percentage of subjects without neurologic signs or symptoms associated with falling had less than ideal stability.Design: Computer dynamic posturography (CDP) provided stability scores in 266 subjects without a history of falls or vertigo. Subjects were randomized into several different music listening groups and … Show more

“…Improvements in balance may be associated with the synchronization between execution of an action and external stimuli, which could regularize and stabilize steps of patients. 48 Carrick et al 49 has also reported positive changes in dynamic posturographic scores among healthy individuals exposed to specific music. In addition, a study by Bukowska et al 41 explored the stability of patients with Parkinson’s disease under eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions after a four-week rehabilitation training.…”

“…As reported in the introduction, FN is currently composed of different sub-specialties which represent various forms of FN practice. These do not always include manual therapy but choose other therapeutic strategies, for example eye movement training [4951], “hemisphere specific remediation programs” [52, 53], and music therapy [54].

“…Carrick et al used computerized dynamic posturography to evaluate 266 asymptomatic individuals after being subjected to various musical styles for 30 days. 23 The examinations showed a high incidence of patients who presented alterations in balance with a risk of falling. The authors did not report how many hours per day and at what volume the patients were exposed to music, only that music by Nolwenn Leroy was the most significant.…”
