Potato Production and Breeding in China

Abstract: China is the world's leading producer of potatoes, growing 22% of all potatoes. Production continues to rise, owing to increases in both land devoted to potato production and yield per hectare. Most potato production occurs in the northern and southwest regions of the country. The processing of coarse starch is the most important component of the potato processing industry in China, but other processing industries, such as crisps and French fries, are expanding. Major production constraints include inadequate … Show more

“…None of these cultivars are used in China. In China, potatoes are grown over a much wider geographic area, ranging from a subtropical climatic zone in the south (e.g., Fujian) to a temperate continental climate zone in Northern China (e.g., Heilongjiang) using more diverse cultivars (Jansky, Jin, Xie, Xie, & Spooner, ), while in Japan, potatoes are mainly grown in the north (Kawakami et al., ).…”

“…China is the world’s leading producer of potatoes [76] and the Ministry of Agriculture has recently (early 2015, see http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2015-01/09/content_19278303.htm) indicated a desire for increase in cultivation and consumption of potatoes in the country. New varieties developed specifically for use in both low and high elevation areas of southwestern China [77] are contributing to a dramatic increase in area under potato cultivation in both winter and summer growing seasons.…”

“…In China potato processing has traditionally focused on starch and noodle production; ≥20 % of the potato crop is used for the production of starch and other products. However, as a result of urbanization and rising incomes there is an increasing demand for processed products common in western societies such as french fries and other frozen products, chips, and dehydrated potatoes (Jansky et al 2009). …”
