Potato resistance to quarantine diseases

Abstract: The casual agent of potato wart Synchytrium endobioti cum (Schilb.) Perc. and potato golden nematode (PGN) Globodera rostochiensis (Wollenweber) Behrens are the quarantine species causing the most widespread and destructive diseases of potato in the Russian Federation and other countries of the world. The potato pale nematode Globodera pallida (Stone) Behrens is not found in Russia, although in the European Union it is found everywhere. The review provides information on the harmfulness of S. endobioticum and … Show more

“…The Golden Potato Cyst Nematode (GPCN, Globodera rostochiensis ) is a quarantine pest found worldwide and responsible for considerable losses in potato production [ 2 , 3 ]. At present, G. rostochiensis (pathotype Ro1) was registered in 61 territorial entities of the Russian Federation, including 861 administrative districts covering an area of 1,794,442 ha [ 4 , 5 ] . Depending on the potato cultivar, yield losses can range from 19 to 90% [ 6 ], and GPCN eggs can remain dormant and viable inside the cyst for 30 years [ 7 ].…”

“…All varieties entering government variety testing should be resistant to the normal strain of fungus. Many breeding varieties, wild and cultivated potato varieties are immune to it [13,14]. The selection of the main parental forms was based on their proven resistance to one of the cancers' strains.…”
