Potential conflict between future development of natural resources and high-value wildlife habitats in boreal landscapes

Abstract: We used the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area in northeast British Columbia, Canada as a case study to determine potential conflicts between future resource development and high-value habitats of large mammals in an undeveloped boreal landscape. More than 50 % of high-value habitats for caribou, moose, elk, wolves and grizzly bears were located in Special Resource Management Zones, where natural resource developments could occur. We developed geographic information system (GIS) layers of potential forest resource… Show more

“…The conservation of cultural landscapes is very relevant within the framework of the European Landscape Convention and its implementation, which has allowed recognizing important conceptual and spatial links between European cultural landscape and the Protected Area network, favoring the resilience of social-ecological systems in the rural areas of Europe [11,12]. However, the method of exploiting ecosystems and the conflict of interest between stakeholders has led to a "conservation against development model" [13][14][15], affecting both the functionality of natural ecosystems and the sustainability of the coupled human and natural systems [16]. The concept of development has been usually associated with the maximization of the supply of those ecosystem services (ES) with the highest direct market values, basically provisioning services, which likely produce spatial and composition homogenization of the landscape and lead indirectly to the decline of the delivery of other regulating or cultural services [17,18].…”

“…My research provides a means of not only assessing the current state of wilderness within the M-KMA, but it can also be used to examine changes over time, and can be used in combination with other resource value mapping (see for example Suzuki & Parker, 2016).…”

“…Using data developed by other resource value mapping projects, land stewards and managers can assess possible resource conflict, compatibility, management, and planning. These data for the natural resource layers (forestry, oil and gas potential, mineral potential and wind energy potential) were previously developed (Suzuki & Parker, 2016). I reclassified each of the resource layers into four categories and then separated out the highest valued category for each resource to overlap with the very-high wilderness category.…”
