Potential Health Benefits of Citrus: An Overview

Abstract: Recent studies have documented a number of health benefits associated with the consumption of citrus, largely due to the natural phytochemicals found in these fruits, such as flavonoids, limonoids, furocoumarins, and pectins. Interest in the chemopreventive properties of phytochemicals has led to more detailed studies to determine the mechanisms of action of these compounds in animal models and humans, to optimize the levels of the phytochemicals in citrus based on agricultural and processing factors, and to d… Show more

“…[62]. Nomilin (2) exhibited the highest inhibition of p38 MAP kinase activity, followed by limonin (1), deacetylnomilin (4), and defurannomilin (36). Furthermore, TNF-α induced p38 MAP kinase activity in the smooth muscle cells was shown to be completely inhibited by 2.…”

“…Newly isolated limonoids will be reported and a wide (but not exhaustive) overview on recent findings concerning limonoid bioactivity will be given. Further references focusing on limonoid biological activities may be found in several excellent previous reviews [1,15,[29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36]. Most of the references reviewed herein derive from Reaxys database.…”

“…Limonoids constitute one of the major phytochemicals in citrus, along with flavonoids, coumarins, and carotenoids. However, recent research has discovered the various health benefits and pharmacological uses of limonoids, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, and anticancer activities (40)(41)(42). Limonoids also exhibited anti-HIV, moderate radical scavenging, and anti-oxidant activities (43,44).…”
