Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Extreme Weather Events in the Niger Delta Part of Nigeria

Abstract: The Niger Delta is the most climate-vulnerable region in Nigeria. Flooding events are recorded annually in settlements along the River Niger and its tributaries, inundating many towns and displacing people from their homes. In this study, climate change impacts from extreme meteorological events over the period 2010–2099 are predicted and analyzed. Four coupled model intercomparison project phase 5 (CMIP5) global climate models (GCMs) under respectively concentration pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) emission scena… Show more

“…Due to these climate changes and variations, frequent extreme climatic disasters, such as flood and droughts, have occurred. ey have resulted in severe adverse impacts on infrastructure, dams, urban drainage systems, and livelihood of human, animals, and vegetation [6,7]. It has been found out that multiday rainfall events have massively contributed to the extreme floods [7][8][9].…”

“…Both the JJA and SON seasons will experience a signi cant and severe increase in precipitation extremes, with higher magnitude recorded in the SON season. Speci cally, Hassan et al, [20] used the downscaled CMIP5 model to demonstrate that mean precipitation will increase signi cantly in July-August-September in most parts of the Niger-Delta region. This indicates that water vapour will be more abundant during the July-August-September season in the near future.…”

“…In this study, six (6) major waste dumpsites, five (5) located in Rivers State (Eleme, Eliozu, Eneka, Oyigbo, Woji) and one (1) located in Bayelsa state (Yenagoa), South-South, Nigeria were selected as shown in Figure 1. The study site is characterized by tropical dry seasons (November to February) and wet seasons (March to October) with a mean annual rainfall increasing from 2000 mm around the northern border to about 4500 mm around the coastal margin [27]. The dumpsites are surrounded by residential houses, factories, gasoline stations, auto spare parts market and auto repair workshops as these expose residents, rag-pickers passer-by including infants to soil and water contaminants by inhalation, ingestion and dermal contacts.…”
