“…28,29 Use of CAM is reportedly increasing among elderly persons, including concomitant use of herbal supplements with conventional medications. 30 Adverse reactions due to polypharmacy, increased sensitivity to some medications, and decreased organ function for medication processing and clearance may be of greater concern to the elderly than to younger persons. Compared with younger and stronger patients, older and frailer patients admitted to the intensive care unit experience higher rates of mortality and morbidity, affecting quality of life and placing a greater burden on resources.…”

“…Although there is a general belief that CAM remedies are safer than conventional ones, adverse events have been reported for several CAM therapies [8,10]. Furthermore, traditional medicines containing toxic heavy metals or undeclared prescription drugs have been described [9], and several interactions between CAM and conventional remedies have been reported [6,16]. Case series concerning liver problems following the repeated use of Chinese herbal medicines for skin disorders, allergic reactions to royal jelly and propolis, as well as heavy metal poisoning caused by remedies from the Indian subcontinent have been described [20].…”

“…The safety concerns raised by the co-use of herbal products and conventional medicines is absolutely non-negligible (Canter and Ernst 2004;Elmer et al 2007). A systematic review summarized clinical pharmacokinetic studies on the interactions between herbs and index medicines (Mills et al 2005).…”
