Potential measurements of thorium tetrachloride in alkali halide solutions

Abstract: P. J. TUMIDAJSKI and S. N. FLENGAS. Can. J. Chem. 69, 462 (1991).The thermodynamic behaviour of ThCI4 -alkali chloride solutions was investigated using galvanic and formation cells of the type (-)Th/ThC14-ACl//asbestos diaphragm//AgCl-ACl/Ag(+) and ( -) T~/ T~C~~-C S C~/ C , C~Z (~.I am)(+) where AC1 represents NaC1, KC1, CsCI, or equimolar mixtures of NaC1-KC1, NaC1-CsC1, and KC1-CsC1. In addition, the thermodynamic behaviour of thorium in mixed alkali chloride -alkali fluoride melts was studied using an elec… Show more

“…The cell design was similar to the chloride formation cells described elsewhere (3,4,7). The cell consisted of a nickel metal electrode immersed in the NiC1,-CoC1,-KC1 molten solution of known composition and a graphite chlorine electrode which also dipped into a molten solution of the same composition.…”

“…In previous publications from the authors, the thermodynamic properties of charge asymmetric molten salt solutions of metal chlorides with alkali halide solvents have been investigated by EMF measurements (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7). The measurements provide valuable and practical information on: the feasibility of new pro-high-temperature batteries and energy storage devices.…”

“…Some authors have observed a reaction between Th metal and ThCl 4 to form ThCl 2 [32,33]. Others have demonstrated the direct oxidation of Th metal to ThCl 4 [34,35]. These conflicting studies indicate the partial stability of ThCl 2 , showing that it is not a promising candidate for stabilizing the redox potential.…”
