Potential MRI Interpretation Model: Differentiation of Benign from Malignant Breast Masses

Abstract: New MRI features, especially from T2-weighted images, are promising for more reliable and accurate interpretation of breast lesions. Prospective studies of these findings are required to define cut-off values and test clinical practicality.

“…As far as we know, our study is the first of its kind that evaluated in detail dynamic and morphologic features calculated by a fully automatic CAD system, integrating the parameters linked to the BI-RADS descriptors. In our study, the morphologic BI-RADS descriptions shape, margin, and internal enhancement significantly differed between benign and malignant masses, comparable to the morphologic analysis of lesions by observers (9,10,32,33); the morphologic description by the CAD system showed high agreement in comparison with the human reader's description of the masses.…”

“…Numbers in parentheses are percentages. distinguishing between benign and malignant breast lesions (6,(9)(10)(11). Each of the descriptors alone is a specific, but not a very sensitive indicator of malignancy (6,9,10,32); for instance, 87% of enhancing lesions with washout sign have been shown to be malignant, but washout can be detected in only 57% of malignancies (6).…”
