Potential of a Small Molecule Carvacrol in Management of Vegetable Diseases

Abstract: Carvacrol, a plant-derived volatile small molecule, is effective against various agents that can cause damage to humans, the food processing industry, and plants, and is considered a safe substance for human consumption. In this short communication, previous studies on the effectiveness of carvacrol against various agents, particularly plant pathogens and their associated mechanisms are described. In our study, carvacrol was found to be effective on media against several soilborne pathogens and in planta again… Show more

“…Squash plants were inoculated with a conidial suspension of P. xanthii at 10 4 spores/ml prepared as described previously. Carvacrol treatment was applied as described previously (Liu et al, 2019b): 24 hr after inoculation, carvacrol alone at 1 mM and carvacrol at 1 mM mixed with Cohere at 0.05% were applied to the inoculated squash plants. Five plants were used as five replicates for each treatment.…”

“…Field inoculation with X. perforans strain QL1 at 10 8 cfu/ml was carried out by spraying using a backpack sprayer on 18 December 2019. The bacterial spot disease was rated as described previously (Liu, et al, 2019b; Zhang et al, 2016). Plant vigour was rated according to the general appearance of the tomato plants in all treatments, as described previously, with 0 = dead and 5 = exceptionally vigorous (Hatier et al, 2014; Liu et al, 2019b).…”

“…The essential oils and their main components such as carvacrol, thymol, and linalool isolated from medicinal plants, contained phenols and other components, are being implemented in pharmaceutical and cosmetology industries as the carriers of antibacterial ( De Falco et al, 2013 ), antiviral and antifungal activity ( Liu et al, 2019 ). At the same time, they are distinguished as anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and cancer suppressor agents ( Leyva-López et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Essential oils and their major components of oregano, thyme and thymus have been reported to induce rapid cell lysis of certain fungal and bacterial disease agents (da Silva et al, 2019;Kachur et al, 2019;Liu et al, 2019;Churklam et al, 2020). Because of essential oils and/or their main components such as carvacrol, thymol and linalool have been reported to possess fungicidal and bactericidal activities (Liu et al, 2019), essential oils or their component could serve as a bacterial disinfectant.…”
