Potential of Cooperative Intelligent Transport System Services to Mitigate Risk Factors Associated With Emergency Vehicle Accidents

Abstract: Emergency vehicles (EVs) are at high risk of accidents during emergency driving. To make use of countermeasures to mitigate these risks, it is important to understand under what circumstances EV-related accidents occur. The common risk factors for EV-related accidents were examined through a systematic literature review. A total of 22 articles were examined for risk factors associated with EV-related accidents. The most reported risk factors were, in order of frequency, intersections, daytime, dry roads, clear… Show more

“…According to the estimation by Rama and Innamaa (2020) [26], various C-ITS warning services have been assessed to reduce the number of "fatality" and "injury crashes". Weibull et al (2022) argued that C-ITS has the potential to mitigate the risks of emergency-vehicle-related accidents [36]. In this context, this study focuses on vehicle speed, acceleration, and deceleration as indicators related to traffic safety.…”

“…Smart transportation mainly relies on the rapid development of the Internet of things in recent computer technology efficiently, and even applies to the entire traffic management system. However, the real-time performance of traffic information is not up to standard [24], and the lack of accumulation of smart logistics technologies [29] has become a factor hindering the development of smart transportation system. At present, the amount of traffic information collection cannot support smart transportation, active transportation and all-round traffic information services, which will greatly affect the efficiency of transportation.…”

“…However, both literature reviews do not provide a systematic classification and summary of the problems of EVs in road traffic control. Weibull accidents during EV's traveling and focus on investigating traffic control strategies for vehicles in cooperative intelligent transportation systems to avoid traffic accidents of EVs [11]. However, most of the traffic strategies in this study are aimed at avoiding accidents with EVs, and investigating strategies to shorten EVs' response time is inadequate.…”
