Dental caries is a problem in the human oral cavity due to the buildup of plaque, which is caused by bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans. Nevertheless, mouthwash may result in a parched mouth and numbness in the oral cavity. Antibacterial properties are therefore recognized in the rosella flower plant (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.). This research was conducted to ascertain the antibacterial activity of the combination of Ethanol Extract of Rosella Flowers (EER) and chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) 0.2% in inhibiting the growth of S. mutans ATCC 25175 bacteria. The maceration method was employed in the extraction procedure, and the agar well diffusion method was followed for antibacterial testing. The concentrations of EER were 5%, 10%, and 20%. The combination of EER 5% and CHG 0.2% was made in comparison series of (1) 1:3, (2) 1:1, and (3) 3:1. Furthermore, the diameter of the inhibitory zone (DZI) and the calculation of Combination Index (CI) were analyzed. The EER at 5%, 10%, and 20% revealed DZI of 12.17 ± 1.04, 21 ± 0.87, and 32.17 ± 0.29 mm, respectively. Then, the combination series of EER 5% and CHG 0.2% of (1) 1:3, (2) 1:1, and (3) 3:1 uncovered DZI of 32.17 ± 0.58; 31.67 ± 1.89; 27.67 ± 0.76 mm, respectively, categorized as very strong. The CI showcased that a combination was antagonistic. The chemical compounds of EER 5% increased the DZI towards S. mutans ATCC 25175 in combination with CHG 0.2%.

Introduction: Traditionally and empirically, Hibiscus sabdariffa L. has been used in treating diabetes mellitus due to its antioxidant activity. This study aimed to investigate the effect of administering the ethyl acetate fraction of hibiscus calyxes (EAFHCs) on malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels, bleeding time, and platelet count in male white rats induced with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Method: Thirty-six Wistar Kyoto rats were induced with intraperitoneal streptozotocin at 55 mg/kg BW and stabilized for 5 days to obtain diabetic conditions. Diabetic animals were divided into four groups; the diabetic group was given vehicle, the glibenclamide group was given 0.45 mg/kg BW of glibenclamide, and two groups were administered the EAFHCs at doses of 100 mg/kg BW and 200 mg/kg BW for 5 days. Subsequently, the MDA, TNF-α, bleeding time and platelet count levels were examined on days 1, 3, and 5, respectively. All data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA followed by the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Results: EAFHC significantly reduced MDA and TNF-α levels (p < 0.05). Additionally, this fraction appeared to shorten bleeding time and decrease platelet count in diabetic rats. Administration of the EAFHC for 5 days effectively lowered MDA and TNF-α levels significantly, decreased platelet counts and prolonged coagulation (p < 0.05) in diabetic rats. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that EAFHC effectively reduces MDA and TNF-α levels and reduces the risk of hypercoagulability in diabetic model.

Hibiscus, particularly Hibiscus sabdariffa , is a flowering plant known for its bright red calyxes and diverse uses in traditional medicine. Historically, cultures throughout Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean have utilized hibiscus for its health benefits, including its role in treating high blood pressure, digestive problems, and skin conditions. The rich phytochemical profile of hibiscus, particularly its high content of anthocyanins and flavonoids, has attracted increasing scientific interest, particularly with regard to its antimicrobial properties. Research shows that hibiscus extracts possess significant antimicrobial activities against various pathogens, including bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and fungi such as Candida albicans. The active ingredients in hibiscus are believed to disrupt microbial membranes, inhibit enzyme activity, and effectively scavenge free radicals, thereby exerting a broad spectrum of antimicrobial effects. The promising antimicrobial properties of hibiscus suggest numerous potential applications, particularly in food preservation, natural antimicrobial agents, and adjunctive therapies for infection control. Future research should focus on elucidating the specific mechanisms of action, optimizing extraction methods for maximum effectiveness, and conducting clinical trials to validate effectiveness in different settings. Additionally, exploring the inclusion of hibiscus in health products, such as wound dressings and topical treatments, could open up new avenues for natural health solutions. Overall, hibiscus represents a valuable opportunity to advance antimicrobial strategies in a world increasingly wary of antibiotic resistance.
