Potential of minimally invasive procedures in the treatment of uterine fibroids: a focus on magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound therapy

Abstract: Minimally invasive treatment options are an important part of the uterine fibroid-treatment arsenal, especially among younger patients and in those who plan future pregnancies. This article provides an overview of the currently available minimally invasive therapy options, with a special emphasis on a completely noninvasive option: magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS). In this review, we describe the background of MRgFUS, the patient-selection criteria for MRgFUS, and how the procedure is perf… Show more

“…Ultrasonic energy is directed to a point inside the fibroid and coagulation tissue necrosis is induced in the myoma. In theory, damage to surrounding tissue is minimal ( Clark et al ., 2014 ; Park et al ., 2014 ) but, in fact, the impact on critical neighboring structures cannot be excluded ( Fischer et al ., 2015 ; Kim et al ., 2015 ).…”

“…However, if a woman has serious pain or other symptoms, several therapy options can be used to treat the symptoms. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists and synthetic steroids with antiprogesterone activity, such as mifepristone, slow or stop the growth of fibroids 8. Surgical therapy or uterine artery embolisation can also be considered 7…”

“…Minimally invasive procedures to treat a variety of cancerous and noncancerous diseases, such as unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma [ 1 ], benign prostatic hyperplasia [ 2 ], uterine fibroids [ 3 ], and acute hemorrhage [ 4 ], have gained much attention in the clinic. Particularly, trans -catheter arterial embolization (TAE) is generally considered safe and effective in interventional therapy, which selectively delivers the embolic agents to the target artery under X–ray guidance.…”
