Potential of MR Mammography to Predict Tumor Grading of Invasive Breast Cancer

Abstract: MR mammography was able to non-invasively assess tumor grading in a standard protocol. Since tumor grading is a surrogate for overall survival, these results provide further evidence to the clinical application of MR mammography as a noninvasive prognostic tool.

“…Accordingly, preoperative staging breast MRI is recommended in various clinical scenarios by senological guidelines and is routinely performed in many institutions before surgery (10). Furthermore, there is also a rising number of trials indicating that preoperative staging breast MRI might be used not only as a diagnostic but also as a prognostic tool (11)(12)(13)(14)(15). This is driven by the hypothesis, that contrast enhanced imaging of breast cancer with breast MRI is able to assess tumor vasculature and neoangiogenesis induced by the neoplasm (16)(17)(18).…”

“…With these criteria, breast MRI has a sensitivity of about 85 % to 99 % in detecting malignant breast lesions, as has been shown in several studies [1, 2, 16 -24]. Recently, the implementation of MRI exams in regular screening settings has been discussed as well [19,25,26]. If MRI of the breast is to be used under screening conditions, the shortening of protocols would be preferable.…”
