Potential of three new krill products for seabream larval production

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate three products derived from krill as sources of essential fatty acids, protein and, particularly, phospholipids in microdiets for larval gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Their e¡ect on larval performance, biochemical composition and histological development was investigated. The addition of krill phospholipids, rich in highly unsaturated fatty acids, improved larval sea bream growth in terms of weight and length, enhanced hepatic utilization of dietary lipids and r… Show more

“…In the present study, the diets were well balanced in mineral and fat‐soluble nutrients, and, therefore, these nutrients do not seem to be related to the growth improvement. Among other nutrients, KM also contains important amounts of astaxanthin and PL (Saito et al, ), which are known to be stimulators of growth in larvae and very young fish (Betancor et al, ; Saleh et al, ). Both carotenoids and PL have been shown to improve digestive utilization of dietary lipids, hepatic utilization of lipids and carbohydrates, and growth in seabream and other sparids (Kalinovski, Robaina, Fernandez‐Palacios, Schuchardt, & Izquierdo, ; Liu et al, ).…”

“…They found a significantly higher length and weight when larvae were fed PL rich in n‐3 highly unsaturated fatty acids. More recently, dietary substitution of 2 g kg −1 DM of soybean lecithin (lipids 213 g kg −1 DM, PL 25 g kg −1 DM, DHA 24 g kg −1 DM) by krill PL (lipids 208 g kg −1 DM, PL 27 g kg −1 DM, DHA 35 g kg −1 DM) improved larval seabream growth in terms of weight and length, enhanced hepatic utilization of dietary lipids and improved gut health (Betancor et al. 2012).…”
