Potential recharge areas of deep aquifers: an application to the Vercelli–Biella Plain (NW Italy)

Abstract: Deep aquifers typically serve as a key source of drinking water due to their good groundwater quality. Then the identification of deep aquifers recharge areas provides the local administration with a management tool to protect groundwater, through the implementation of legislative measures for the control of pollution sources. However, the location and size of recharge areas of deep aquifers are often difficult to define and generally require a large amount of data. The aim of this paper is to propose a method… Show more

“…Direct methods comprise geological and geophysical explorations, gravimetric and magnetic methods, and drilling tests. Indirect methods include hydrological modeling [58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66] using geographic information systems (GIS) combined with fieldwork, geochemical tracers [67][68][69], survey of specialized literature for standard values [15,16,70,71], among others. The choice for a method (direct or indirect) should consider the precision level needed, the project execution, and the resources available.…”

“…The recharge areas of the deep aquifers occur in the high plain sectors, close to the Alps, where the hydrogeological complexes hosting deep aquifers outcrop or the low permeable intercalations have limited spatial continuity and thickness (De Luca et al, 2019a).…”
