Potential role of medicinal plants for anti-atherosclerosis activity

Abstract: Atherosclerosis may lead to the death of a number of people. In case of atherosclerosis, stiffness of arteries of the heart is caused by the excess deposition of lipids in the coronary arteries. The mentioned condition produces atherosclerotic plaques. When these plaques are burst then clots of blood are formed that cause coronary issues. To overcome this severe disease, extracts of many medicinal plants or spices like garlic, ginger and onion, and many others that are mentioned in this review are used to trea… Show more

“…It is equally well documented in the literature that a direct relationship exists between hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis which is considered as a major cause of cardiovascular disease, especially coronary heart disease [ 105 107 ]. Thus, drugs including medicinal plants with hypolipidemic/antihyperlipidemic activities could equally be considered antiatherosclerotic and cardioprotective [ 108 110 ]. Thus, the hypolipidemic/antihyperlipidemic activity of CVE observed in this study is in tandem with those previously reported for Clerodendrum volubile and related species [ 32 , 80 , 111 – 114 ].…”

“…Investigators have also reported the protective effect of T. portulacastrum in adriamycin-induced nephrotic syndrome (Karim 2012). Qadir et al (2018) reported the potential role of medicinal plants as anti-atherosclerotic agents. Gong et al (2018) reported that GPR124 increases the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis via activation of inflammation.…”

“…Plant extracts are reported to have medicinal effects such as antioxidant (Attanayake et al 2016), antibacterial (Ogbole et al 2018), antifungal (Giordani et al 2020), and anticancer (Sammar et al 2019). It also has been used as therapeutic drugs for degenerative diseases such as diabetes (Deo et al 2016) and cardiovascular (Qadir et al 2018). Advanced research in the pharmaceutical industry shifts people's perspectives on medicinal plants from unregulated traditional usage to phytopharmaceutical which is qualitatively and quantitatively standardized (Bhatt 2016).…”
