Potential Therapeutic Targets of the Endocannabinoid System in Common Neurodegenerative Disorders and Organic Acidemias

Abstract: The cannabinoid chemistry is currently being addressed in preclinical approaches as a viable therapeutic alternative for the management of a wide range of signs, symptoms, and some biochemical hallmarks of many neurological pathologies (such as neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration). This clinical orientation is grounded on the consistent promissory profile that cannabinoid compounds have shown, and the great necessity of feasible options to undergo such disorders. Even though at early research stages, metab… Show more

“…The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has been recognized for its therapeutic role for the past two decades. It consists of receptors, ligands, and associated molecules, altogether playing an essential role in physiological and pathological conditions (Aguilera & Santamaria, 2017; Gómez‐Ruiz et al., 2007; Reggio, 2010). Its function is implicated in physiological processes like nociception, appetite, lipid metabolism, gastrointestinal motility, cardiovascular modulation, pain sensation, motor activity, mood, and memory (Di Marzo, 2018; Kunos et al., 2000; Lichtman, 2000; Pertwee, 2001; Zogopoulos et al., 2013a).…”
