Abstract: Melatonin is an indoleamine that is secreted not only in the pineal gland, but also in other organs, in particular the salivary glands. Numerous  studies show that melatonin levels in the saliva and serum of patients suffering from periodontal disease are reduced, suggesting that it may play  an important role in protecting tissues from damage caused by oxidative stress.
